About Professional Practice

I believe that the use of professional practice within the workplace is highly important and should be recognised accordingly. My understanding of professional practice is that, it is the use and application of an individual’s knowledge about a particular profession. By using the knowledge about policing procedures and duties that I have gained while studying my policing degree, I will be able to apply that knowledge to my practical work within the Federal Police force. When entering the police force, having my own professional practice, I will look forward to encouraging others to pursue more knowledge and insight about policing, hopefully resulting in more informed and educated police officers.

About Interprofessionalism

Inter-professionalism is a relevant and integral aspect to every profession. Inter-professionalism is the collaboration and collaborative practice of different people within the same profession, as well as people outside a particular profession working together on a project. Inter-professionalism is important within the policing profession as police work is largely group based. Most, if not all police work requires the collaboration of different individuals within the police force, and individuals from other professions. When these individuals such as officers, detectives, forensics, social workers and criminologists all work collaboratively, investigations can be solved and completed, and crime can be confronted and reduced.

About Ethical Practice

Ethical practice is essential and highly relevant to all professions. Ethical practice sets values and professional standards within professions and often reflects on what society, and the individuals within society, deem as good values. Ethical practice is crucial in policing as police officers must be able to establish trust and respect within the communities they serve for effective policing. This is done by using ethical practices, such as police code of ethics and statements of values, to ensure that officers are making ethical choices when carrying out their duties and procedures within the community.

Policing Graduate Slkill Set and Knowledge

Generic Skills

Throughout studying my degree and working part-time, I have developed and gained many skills to apply within the workplace. While studying my degree I have had to take part in group assessments and activities, that taught me how to work within a group and allowed me to further develop my communication skills, through communicating with a range of diverse people. Through working part time, I have also allowed myself to expand my skills in communication, through talking with and listening to different people about their situations and experiences. While studying and working at the same time, I have been able to further develop my time management and planning skills.

Specialised Skills

While studying my degree, I have been able to develop an array of specialised skills that can be applied to the workforce. Not only have the units I’ve studied throughout my degree taught me procedures that are involved within policing, but they have also taught me valuable specialised skills that can be used within the police force. I have learnt important research skills that have allowed me to research wide spread areas when in need for information. I have also learnt how to properly and appropriately conduct interviews, which will be valuable when interviewing and taking statements from offenders as well as victims and witnesses. It is skills like these that will directly help me when in the police force.

Community Funding Application Development:

I have great capacity and skills needed to conduct different community needs analysis. I possess great research skills and am able to undertake the different amounts of research that may be needed to conduct different analyses. From these obtained research skills, I am able to identify issues and identify the need for different projects and develop proposals to bring forward to different institutions. I also have great ability to investigate and research possible funding bodies for different projects. My ability to investigate funding bodies was demonstrated in the community funding application that my group and I undertook during my university course. This group activity gave me the great skills I now have when it comes to conducting community needs analysis. This group assessment also helped me improve my ability to identify issues to base projects and proposals on and also being able in research and investigate possible funding bodies, such as the Department of Juvenile Justice ( the institution we sought funding from) for the project.

Applied Debating: Developing Position Papers

The ability to debate about a topic you are passionate about is an important skill as it can often show who you are as a person. By having completed a position paper on the topic of multiculturalism within Australia, I have gained the valuable skill set of writing and debating about important topics that are not only important political topics but also topics that are importing to myself and my beliefs. By gaining these skills, I can transfer them into the workforce and use them regarding important issues to me within my field of work.
